The day’s Podcast is always an interesting journey with the story of the day’s music over the years…..and there are some very interesting stories about the music of the day.  1968 – The Beatles ‘Sgt Pepper’ won album of the year, best cover and best-engineered and recorded album at this years Grammy Awards.

Come on girls this is your big day. It’s that special day, inaugurated in Scotland, when the ladies can propose to the man of their dreams. The man would have had to pay a fine if he had declined the ladies offer. Make your mind up quickly as the next one is 2016!
I’ve been up by 6 am and off to walk for anything up to an hour as the new lifestyle kicks in. It would be nice to try and kid you that the desert is warm at this hour of the morning. No. It’s like Spain. It begins to warm up around seven but the same things happen here as in Spain on the Costa Blanca. The temperature had dropped last night and it was a colder start to the day. As ever, people were out walking and the roads were beginning to get busy. One very notable difference here is that nobody jaywalks. It would be foolish to cross when the traffic is moving and every major street corner has a button to push to stop the traffic. It’s nothing we haven’t got in Spain but just more of it although it must be said there was more jaywalking in Britain when we lived there. In the American movies when you see a jogger waiting for the lights to change it is easier to understand why when you see it in action.
If there are any readers who would like to make their computers more computer friendly for children then here is a link for you. Mike Baker and Iris, the Silver Surfer talking really good sense to keep children safe with computers……http://www.vincetracy.com/techno.html
This is a podcast which we made from a live radio show on OCI in Spain. I am sure the Spanish owners of the station had no idea of the quality of our programmes and I feel really proud of the programmes we put out. This particular show had two brilliant guests with me in the studio. Iris, the Silver Surfer, has been a wonderful guest on many of my shows. She is a tremendously well-liked radio voice with a really valuable wealth of experience. Mike Baker has a tremendous reputation on the Costa Blanca for his tremendous knowledge on the technical side of the computer. Both gave their time freely and I loved to have both of them on my show. It also might help somebody be more aware of what lurks around the internet as a danger to children or vulnerable adults.
We visited a great store called Costgo today. Our nearest equivalent in the UK that I can remember would be Makro. This is a store we also have in Benidorm. Costgo is massive and I was really impressed by the way the staff worked with a good greeting at the point of entrance and their availability throughout the visit. The amount of stock was staggering and the amount of people buying huge quantities to take away makes me wonder where they put all the stuff when they get home. I was also put in mind of the following quote……..Civilization as it is known today could not have evolved, nor can it survive, without an adequate food supply. Norman Borlaug

The day’s Podcast is always an interesting journey with the story of the day’s music over the years…..and there are some very interesting stories about the music of the day. 1942,  Brian Jones, guitar, Rolling Stones. Jones died on July 3rd 1969 after drowning in his swimming pool under the influence of alcohol and drugs.

I went to a very special place yesterday. It was a municipal cemetery in Palm Springs. It is the last resting place of Frank Sinatra. Opposite this park is a private resting place where many placards announce who has been laid to rest. It looks like a lot of money has been spent. Frank Sinatra could have chosen anywhere he wanted to have his last resting place. He could have chosen a really ostentatious resting place. Instead he chose to end his days in a municipal park where there is  hardly anything to denote where he lies. He chose to be with his parents and the park is so serene that on the day that I visited it seemed rather a sad way to end such a huge career. Also buried in the same cemetery and in the same way are other well-known names such as Sonny Bono who we first got to know as Cher’s partner in many a fine hit song. He went on to become the mayor of Palm Springs and I have a picture on Facebook to show his statue on the main road in the town……

Subject: Red Indians

It’s  late fall and the Indians on a remote reservation in South Dakota asked  their new chief if the coming winter was going to be cold  or  mild.
Since  he was a chief in a modern society, he had never been taught the old  secrets. When he looked at the sky, he couldn’t tell what the winter was  going to be like.
Nevertheless,  to be on the safe side, he told his tribe that the winter was indeed  going to be cold and that the members of the village should collect firewood to be  prepared.
But,  being a practical leader, after several days, he got an idea. He went to  the phone booth, called the National Weather Service and asked, ‘Is the  coming winter going to be cold?’
‘It  looks like this winter is going to be quite cold,’ the meteorologist at  the weather service responded.
So  the chief went back to his people and told them to collect even more  firewood in order to be prepared.
A  week later, he called the National Weather Service again. ‘Does it still  look like it is going to be a very cold winter?’
‘Yes,’  the man at National Weather Service again replied, ‘it’s going to be a  very cold winter.’
The  chief again went back to his people and ordered them to collect every  scrap of firewood they could find.
Two  weeks later, the chief called the National Weather Service again. ‘Are  you absolutely sure that the winter is going to be very  cold?’
‘Absolutely,’  the man replied.  ’It’s looking more and more like it is going to  be one of the coldest winters we’ve ever  seen.’

‘How  can you be so sure?’ the chief asked.
The  weatherman replied, ‘The  Indians are collecting a shitload of  firewood’
I’m Thirsty

A small boy is sent to bed by his father. Five minutes
later: “Da-ad…”

“What?”

“I’m thirsty. Can you bring a drink of water?”

“No, you had your chance. Lights out.”

Five minutes later: “Da-aaaad…”

“WHAT?”

“I’m THIRSTY. Can I have a drink of water?”

“I told you NO! If you ask again, I’ll have to spank you!”

Five minutes later: “Daaaa-aaaad…”

“WHAT!”

“When you come in to spank me, can you bring a drink of
water?”

1966, Police were called after over a 100 music fans barricaded themselves inside Liverpool’s Cavern Club to protest at the clubs closer. The club had run up debts of over £10,000.On reflection, the city council should have invested in the club as a tourist attraction

The following year Green confronted his accountant with a gun after he sent him an unwanted royalty check. Maybe it wasn’t that he was ill but getting his priorities sorted out

The day’s Podcast is always an interesting journey with the story of the day’s music over the years…..and there are some very interesting stories about the music of the day.1967, Pink Floyd recorded their first single ‘Arnold Layne’, with producer Joe Boyd at Sound Techniques studio in Chelsea, England. .

At last the wait is over and Liverpool’s trophy drought is over. I saw quite a bit of the game and Cardiff were not there just to make the numbers up. They certainly gave King Kenny and his men a very good run for their money once again showing the money paid to Premiership players in my opinion is far too high. Littered throughout the cup competitions the minnows can be seen showing the commitment not seen by many players in the Premiership. I was also pleased to see a bit of relief for Arsene Wenger. I said Arsenal was not a bad team and they thrashed Tottenham to prove as much.

THE GREEN ‘CROSS’ MAN

Posted: 25 Feb 2012 11:01 AM PST

As you will appreciate we see an awful lot from our offices above the La Zenia Roundabout on the N332, a lot of it involving the actions of the numerous Guardia Civil checks which seem to increase almost day by day. And not all of them involve vehicles and traffic. On Saturday a lady was stopped by an officer after she had done nothing more than cross the road.

For those of you who know the area she crossed at the start of the carriageway by La Zenia Catholic Church. She waited until the traffic had passed and it was safe to do so. She walked across the two carriageways from the beach side of the road to the Caja Murcia bank where she was stopped and given a ‘ticket’ for jaywalking. She was told by the officer that she must only cross by the large blue bridge adjacent to the Bienvenido Chinese restaurant.

Unfortunately for her she had an excellent grasp of Spanish and so she told the Guardia Officer exactly what she thought of his decision to prosecute her which, quite probably, didn’t do her any great favours. I have little doubt that the size of her fine increased as he became progressively more cross.

This is an aspect of the Spanish Law that has passed me by. I may well be wrong but I don’t recollect seeing anything specifically that prohibits pedestrians from crossing main roads on foot. If anyone is aware of a law to the contrary I would be grateful for that information so that I can pass it on. In the meantime, before you cross a main highway in the future, I would have a quick scan of exactly who might be watching nearby before you end up incurring the wrath of the Green ‘Cross´ Man.

Last month a world-wide telephone survey was conducted by the UN.

The only question asked was:
“Could you please give your honest opinion about solutions to the food shortage in the rest of the world?”
The survey was a massive failure because of the following:
1. In Eastern Europe they didn’t know what “honest” meant.
2. In Western Europe they didn’t know what “shortage” meant.
3. In Africa they didn’t know what “food” meant.
4. In China they didn’t know what “opinion” meant.
5. In the Middle East they didn’t know what “solution” meant.
6. In South America they didn’t know what “please” meant.
7. In the USA they didn’t know what “the rest of the world” meant.
8. In the UK they hung up as soon as they heard the Indian.

Q: Why do men’s clothes have buttons on the right while women’s clothes have buttons on the left?
A: When buttons were invented, they were very expensive and worn
Primarily by the rich. Since most people are right-handed, it is
Easier to push buttons on the right through holes on the left.
Because wealthy women were dressed by maids, dressmakers put the buttons on the maid’s right. And that’s where they have remained.

Q: Why do ships and aircraft use ‘mayday’ as their call for help?
A: This comes from the French word m’aidez -meaning ‘help me’ — and is pronounced, approximately, ‘mayday.’

Q: Why are zero scores in tennis called ‘love’?
A: In France , where tennis became popular, round zero on the scoreboard looked like an egg and was called ‘l’oeuf,’ which is French for ‘egg.’ When tennis was introduced in the US , Americans (mis)pronounced it ‘love.’

Q. Why do X’s at the end of a letter signify kisses?
A: In the Middle Ages, when many people were unable to read or write, documents were often signed using an X. Kissing the X represented an oath to fulfill obligations specified in the document. The X and the kiss eventually became synonymous.

Q: Why is shifting responsibility someone else called ‘passing the buck’?
A: In card games, it was once customary to pass an item, called a buck, from player to player to indicate whose turn it was to deal. If a player did not wish to assume the responsibility of dealing,he would ‘pass the buck’ to the next player.

Q: Why do people clink their glasses before drinking a toast?
A: It used to be common for someone to try to kill an enemy by offering him a poisoned drink. To prove to a guest that a drink was safe, it became customary for a guest to pour a small amount of his drink into the glass of the host. Both men would drink it simultaneously. When a guest trusted his host, he would only touch or clink the host’s glass with his own.

Q: Why are  people in the public eye said to be ‘in the limelight’?A:Invented in 1825,limelight was used in lighthouses and theatres by burning a cylinder of lime which produced a brilliant light.. In the theatre,a performer ‘in the limelight’ was the centre of attention.

Q: Why is someone who is feeling great ‘on cloud nine’?
A: Types of clouds are numbered according to the altitudes they attain, with nine being the highest cloud If someone is said to be on cloud nine, that person is floating well above worldly cares.

Q: In golf, where did the term ‘Caddie’ come from?
A. When Mary Queen of Scots went to France as a young girl,Louis, King of France, learned that she loved the Scots game ‘golf.’ So he had the first course outside of Scotland built for her enjoyment. To make sure she was properly chaperoned (and guarded) while she played, Louis hired cadets from a military school to accompany her. Mary liked this a lot and when returned to Scotland (not a good idea in the long run) she took the practice with her. In French, the word cadet is pronounced ‘ca-day’ and the Scots changed it into ‘caddie.

Q: Why  are many coin banks shaped like pigs?
A: Long ago, dishes and cookware in Europe were made of a dense orange clay called ‘pygg’. When people saved coins in jars made of this clay, the jars became known as ‘pygg banks.’ When an English potter misunderstood the word, he made a container that resembled a pig. It caught on.

Q: Did you ever wonder why dimes, quarters and half dollars have notches (milling), while pennies and nickels do not?
A: The US Mint began putting notches on the edges of coins containing gold and silver to discourage holders from shaving off small quantities of the precious metals. Dimes, quarters and half dollars are notched because they used to contain silver. Pennies and nickels aren’t notched because the metals they contain are not valuable enough to shave.

He inspired love and had the strength of a hundred men. The world is a profoundly emptier place without him.” -Bob Dylan on George Harrison

Never confuse “activity” with “productivity”. Unknown

The day’s Podcast is always an interesting journey with the story of the day’s music over the years…..and there are some very interesting stories about the music of the day.1955, Billboard reported that for the first time since their introduction in 1949, 45rpm singles were outselling the old standard 78′s. Now look at this technological leap forward as I pinch myself. I have You Tube lesson playing in my right ear. I am watching an English Premiership soccer match on the TV and using my Laptop to communicate with people around the world.  In the 80s I was studying the use of time in Leisure Studies Programmes and all this was predicted at that time. I learned in the 80s that if I could use a computer and speak a couple of languages I would always find something to do. I think what I am doing right now proved I wasn’t wasting my time then and I certainly don’t feel I am wasting my time now!

I was watching a wonderful tribute night dedicated to Muhammed Ali. The evening was held in Las Vegas and there were stars from every walk of life paying tribute to the main man. If ever there was a man who has touched the hearts of millions throughout the world then this is the man. It is almost inconceivable that a super fit athlete like Muhammed Ali can be struck down by such a horrible illness as Parkinsons Disease. My heart goes out to anyone suffering from this and other equally horrible illnesses. Happy Birthday to the greatest now 70.

Old Records

My friend’s husband, responsible for the overall closing of
a military base, was reviewing voluminous files. He found
some old records that were of no possible value and sent a
letter to Washington requesting permission to destroy them.

The reply he received read as follows: “Permission is given
to destroy the records, but please make triplicate copies of
them first.”

Solitude is as needful to the imagination as society is wholesome for the character. – James Russell Lowell, 1819-1891

Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you have imagined. – Henry David Thoreau, 1817-1862

The day’s Podcast is always an interesting journey with the story of the day’s music over the years…..and there are some very interesting stories about the music of the day.1964, The Beatles finished recoding their next single ‘Can’t Buy Me Love’, at Abbey Road studios, London. They also recorded the B-side, ‘You Can’t Do That’ and another new song ‘I Should have known better.

This is surreal. We got up and went out for a walk at 7 am and we are now back in the house watching a Spanish channel showing Chelsea at home to Bolton. Yes. I’m watching the Barclays premiership live at 8.30 in the morning and it’s 65 minutes into the match. El Chelsea are leading 2-0 and the Spanish commentators are talking about Elton John and El Watford. They’ve just told us Newcastle have won which is a bit of a blow. Never mind. It’s Liverpool in the Cup tomorrow and they’re just talking about the match in Spanish. I’m going to add some pictures of the area right now.

I despair of what is happening in Britain when I read such stories as the one below regarding the work of the police. It’s almost as if common sense has been aborted at all levels.

POLICE officers are handing back stolen goods to CRIMINALS – because their rightful owners can’t be traced.

The bizarre scenario has occurred because the law bans officers from keeping items without clear proof that a theft has taken place. It means baffled bobbies are being forced to return likely loot worth thousands of pounds to thieves. So far items including racing bikes worth up to £3,000 have been returned to suspected criminals.  Source

HUNGER STRIKE PROTESTOR ADMITTED TO HOSPITAL

The former municipal worker of Calpe who began a hunger strike protesting against job cuts in the council this week has been admitted to the General Hospital of Alicante.

Having lost his job after 11 years of service, 50 year old Antonio Simón began his protest on Tuesday, as he saw it as the only way of raising the issue of how he would now be unable to support his 80 year old mother. Against medical advice, he vowed to starve himself indefinitely, but his refusal to also take medication for an underlying medical condition has accelerated his deterioration, resulting in him being admitted to hospital for treatment. He is now being injected with life preserving drugs as prescribed by legal intervention.

NO EU HELP TO ERADICATE PALM WEEVILS

The councillor for parks and gardens in the city of Elche, Manuel Rodríguez, has announced that the European Union has rejected a request for economic funding to combat the red palm weevil, as part of the EU´s LIFE project.

The whole project has a budget of 3.5 million euro, of which the council had requested 1.7 million, of which 252,000 euro was for the city of Elche do devise a plan for improved infrastructure to beat the plague. The request was denied as the EU considered that Elche is “a cultural and historical landscape, but cannot be considered natural or a natural habitat”.

However, despite the refusal for funding, the councillor has vowed that the municipality will continue to work towards eradicating the scourge of the red palm weevil.

RESCUED FROM FIRES

Fire-fighters rescued the 67 and 35 year old occupants of a first floor apartment in a block on calle Federico Mayo, in the town of José Antonio, both suffering the effects of smoke inhalation.

An off duty fireman had already stopped the gas supply to the building before teams of rescuers arrived to rescue the victims via the balcony, before extinguishing the flames, the cause of which is now being investigated.

Meanwhile, two pensioners suffered poisoning by smoke in a fire in their home in Elda, after a flat level interior fire became uncontrollable and ignited furniture which was close by.

The burning furniture caused the smoke which was then inhaled by the residents, before emergency services arrived and extinguished the blaze before it became deadly.

The day’s Podcast is always an interesting journey with the story of the day’s music over the years…..and there are some very interesting stories about the music of the day. 1957, Buddy Holly recorded a new version of ‘That’ll Be The Day’, the title being taken from a phrase used by John Wayne in the film ‘The Searchers.’

It’s been a very hot day in the desert and we started at 6.30 am with a nice walk. There were quite a few people out walking their dogs or getting in their power walk to keep fit. The striking thing was that everyone wanted to say hello and even stop and have a chat. It was warm even at 6 in the morning and it was also noticeable that sprinklers were being used everywhere. Palm Springs enjoys 360 days without rain and yet there is always enough to water the plants. There is certainly a very healthy water management plan in operation. We’ve also heard from several people that the housing market is showing signs of recovery. One person in particular is very convinced he is right in investing in property again.

It was a really sad day for comedy yesterday with news of the deaths of Ken Goodwin and Frank Carson. I had made a very enjoyable podcast with Frank Carson and this is available on my site. I had compered Ken Goodwin at the Hamilton Club in the 70s and I knew he had been living near Moraira for quite a while. Both had been on the cult show The Comedians.

ALWAYS ASK, NEVER ASSUME!!
His request approved, the CNN News photographer
quickly used a cell phone to call the local airport
to charter a flight.

He was told a twin-engine plane

would be waiting for him at the airport.

Arriving at the airfield, he spotted a plane

warming up outside a hanger.

He jumped in with his bag, slammed the door shut,

and shouted, ‘Let’s go’.

The pilot taxied out, swung the plane

into the wind and took off.

Once in the air, the photographer instructed

the pilot, ‘Fly over the valley and make
low passes so I can take pictures
of the fires on the hillsides.’

‘Why?’ asked the pilot.

‘Because I’m a photographer for CNN’

he responded, ‘and I need to get
some close up shots.’

The pilot was strangely silent for a moment,

finally he stammered, ‘So, what you’re telling me,
is . . . You’re NOT my flying instructor?’

As we Silver Surfers know, sometimes we have trouble with our computers. I had a problem yesterday, so I called Eric, the 11 year old next door, whose bedroom looks like Mission Control, and asked him to come over.

Eric clicked a couple of buttons and solved the problem. As he was walking away, I called after him, ‘So, what was wrong ?  He replied, ‘It was an ID ten T error.’

I didn’t want to appear stupid, but nonetheless enquired, ‘An, ID ten T error ? What’s that? In case I need to fix it again.’
Eric grinned….
‘Haven’t you ever heard of an ID ten T error before ?
‘No,’ I replied.
‘Write it down,’ he said, ‘and I think you’ll figure it out.’ So I wrote down:
ID10T
I used to like Eric, the little shit.

The Day’s Events 24 February

1848 – The Communist Manifesto was published. I had to read this when I was reading for my degree and it is written there that if you want to defeat Capitalism you need to get into the family and disrupt it. Also, it was predicted that Capitalism will defeat itself. I think you’ll find this has almost been done.

1857 – The Los Angeles Vinyard Society was organized. Cheers

1866 – In Washington, DC, an American flag made entirely of American bunting was displayed for the first time. Wow-this was a bit earth-shattering!

1868 – The first parade to use floats occurred in New Orleans at Mardi Gras. Maybe they’ll do the same on Pancake Tuesday.

1900 – New York City Mayor Van Wyck signed the contract to begin work on New York’s first rapid transit tunnel. The tunnel would link Manhattan and Brooklyn. The ground breaking ceremony was on March 24, 1900. Wonderful

1903 – In Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, an area was leased to the U.S. for a naval base.

1924 – Johnny ‘Tarzan’ Weissmuller broke the world’s record in the 100-meter swimming event. He did it in 57 2/5 seconds. If he hadn’t done this he could have been swinging through the trees.

1938 – The first nylon bristle toothbrush was made. It was the first time that nylon yarn had been used commercially. Was it Pink?

1942 – The U.S. Government stopped shipments of all 12-gauge shotguns for sporting use for the wartime effort.

1946 – Juan Peron was elected president of Argentina. I know the song

1956 – The city of Cleveland invoked a 1931 law that barred people under the age of 18 from dancing in public without an adult guardian. Freedom

1981 – Buckingham Palace announced the engagement of Britain’s Prince Charles to Lady Diana Spencer. She was a lovely girl and I was always a fan…

1989 – Iran’s Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini sentenced Salman Rushdie to death for his novel “The Satanic Verses”. A bounty of one to three-million-dollars was also put on Rushidie’s head. How can any religious leader sanction such blood lust?

1989 – A United Airlines 747 jet rips open in flight killing 9 people. The flight was from Honolulu to New Zealand. Dreadful

1999 – In southeast China, a domestic airliner crashed killing all 64 passengers. Dreadful

The weather in the desert is very hot right now and it is great to be working in my shorts again.

It’s amazing how many unseen or unknown people influence your life. We had our travel tickets booked through an agency and never met the agent. The computers we were using were invented, produced and delivered then installed by an unknown workforce and so people were involved before we set foot outside the house. Our trip could have started badly as our flight was cancelled because of the pilot strike in Spain. Our friend, Dave, had dropped us off at Alicante Airport and had gone off sublimely unaware that we were facing a crisis in the first minutes of our trip to California. We were booked onto this flight due to fly from Alicante to Madrid at 9.40 and here we were at 7.45 with no prior notification that there would be a problem. My Spanish lessons paid off as I was able to impress on the lady at the desk that this was not our fault and we should have been informed. She immediately came out of the office to deliver impeccable customer service by getting us booked onto the 8.30 flight to Madrid. God knows how we did it but we got through the checks and we found ourselves on the plane one hour ahead of our schedule. Any later plane would not have got us the connection. Madrid is a hub airport and is huge. My Spanish lessons also helped as we found the right place where we had to be very quickly. I had to explain we had been given temporary boarding passes and these needed to be exchanged and all the new stringent security checks made as we managed to get ourselves into the right waiting area for the plane to Dallas. I think two points from my earlier decision-making bore fruit. One was to always arrive early and then those Spanish lessons……

The flight to Madrid is quick and relatively painless and I have to thank Sheenagh for referring Paul McKenna’s DVD which helped me overcome my fear of flying. I still don’t enjoy turbulence but that goes with the territory. The 10 hour flight to Dallas was a little tiring but there were three snacks or meals served and the television was bearable. It’s always a good idea to have your earphones with you! The highlight of the trip was actually seeing the Great Lakes of Canada. It was already very interesting to see the coastline of the Iberian Peninsula disappear and with hours of the Atlantic already in mind it was a relief to see the coast of Greenland and then the expanse of Canada. All this impressed on me the bravery of all those pioneers crossing the Atlantic and the explorers in the wilderness areas of Canada. It also becomes very evident just how big Canada is as the plane speeding along at 500 miles per hour gradually moved into the USA. We had a Canadian couple sitting ahead of us and they pointed out to us which were the famous lakes. Translating this into North American English ….it was awesome! The nature of the landscape was changing as we travelled south and it really wasn’t overly long before we were landing in Dallas and I was reflecting on just how good these airline professionals are and how well they do their jobs. We stayed at the Fairfield in Dallas and then up early for the next day after a good night’s sleep.

Incidentally, we caught Piers Morgan’s TV show on American TV. He seems to be building a household name for himself in the States and I am now, more than ever, of the opinion he is being groomed as a world player in the Murdoch empire. With the news that the Sun on Sunday cometh and the hypocrisy that surrounded the hearings at the time of the News of the World folding I am convinced he will return to the UK to bigger things at some future time.

The news on the television here has been primarily about the price of gas in the States. Many of the callers made the point that it was incredibly silly not to be drilling for more oil in the States or completing the pipeline from Alaska. The breakdown showed the price of a gallon around 65% of the price and 10% was spent on marketing. The taxes were about 11% and then I think the rest was local tax. The point was made time and again the rich would always be able to avoid what was now economically hurting the middle class and Obama should be rolling back the taxes to avoid hyperinflation. It was clear to see why the problem is so important. The traffic around Dallas at 6.30 am. was pretty intense and the calls into the TV show illustrate the worries and concerns of everybody. There was a balance of opinion with many aware the problems are global but with the added notation that there is an election ahead and policies will be looking for vote catching ideas. Onto the airport and the security is ever tightening with newer and more stringent checks causing slight queuing but most people accepting this as a necessary evil. The staff seemed to want to be businesslike at the point of entry and friendlier and more chatty once the checks had been successfully made. The story progresses…….I was asked to share the following…..

BE AWARE EVERYONE WHO CARRIES OUT PAYPAL TRANSACTIONS – SERIOUS!
I’ve just been scammed. This is not forwarded from anywhere else, it’s me writing it.
I received an email this morning that looked as though it was genuinely from Paypal, telling me my account had been limited and to confirm my details. I went through the link, including what looked like genuinely logging in via the normal way, and verified my credit card details in the form that was on there. IT INCLUDED MY PIN NO!
Yes, of course I was suspicious, but as it was Paypal and had http at the start of the www address, I entered it. I sent it off then tried to log out. I clicked on ‘log out’ and nothing happened, then I clicked on ‘next’ and, you’ve guessed it, nothing happened. Immediately I phoned Paypal, who confirmed they NEVER send out emails like this.
Fortunately I was able to put a stop on it before anyone used Paypal, and also managed to cancel my credit card before there were any purchases or withdrawals made. Today’s lesson learned by me!
Even if you do not use Paypal, please forward this warning to anyone you know who may use Paypal
Thanks

Two 90 year old men, Mike and Joe, have been friends all of their lives.
When it’s clear that Joe is dying, Mike visits him every day. One day Mike says, “Joe, we both loved rugby all our lives, and we played rugby on Saturdays together for so many years. Please do me one favour, when you get to Heaven, somehow you must let me know if there’s rugby there.”
Joe looks up at Mike from his death bed,” Mike, you’ve been my best friend for many years. If it’s at all possible, I’ll do this favour for you.
Shortly after that, Joe passes on.
At midnight a couple of nights later, Mike is awakened from a sound sleep by a blinding flash of white light and a voice calling out to him, “Mike–Mike.”
“Who is it? Asks Mike sitting up suddenly. “Who is it?”
“Mike–it’s me, Joe.”
“You’re not Joe. Joe just died.”
“I’m telling you, it’s me, Joe,” insists the voice.”
“Joe! Where are you?”
“In heaven”, replies Joe. “I have some really good news and a little bad news.”
“Tell me the good news first ,” says Mike.
“The good news,” Joe says,” is that there’s rugby in heaven. Better yet, all of our old friends who died before us are here, too. Better than that, we’re all young again. Better still, it’s always spring time and it never rains or snows. And best of all, we can play rugby all we want, and we never get tired.”
That’s fantastic,” says Mike. “It’s beyond my wildest dreams! So what’s the bad news?
“You’re in the team for this Saturday.”

Therapy”

Two women were playing golf. One teed off and watched in horror as her ball
headed directly toward a foursome of men playing the next hole. The ball hit one
of the men.

He immediately clasped his hands together at his groin, fell to the ground and
proceeded to roll around in agony.

The woman rushed down to the man, and immediately began to apologize. ‘Please
allow me to help. I’m a Physical Therapist and I know I could relieve your pain
if you’d allow me, she told him.

‘Oh, no, I’ll be all right. I’ll be fine in a few minutes,’ the man replied.
He was in obvious agony, lying in the foetal position, still clasping his hands
there at his groin.

At her persistence, however, he finally allowed her to help. She gently took
his hands away and laid them to the side, loosened his pants and put her hands
inside.
She administered tender and artful massage for several long moments and asked,
‘How does that feel’?
He replied: It feels great, but I still think my thumb’s broken!

Bananas

A professor at CCNY for a physiological psych class told his class about bananas.  He said the expression “going bananas” is from the effects of bananas on the brain.  Read on:

You might be aware that I eat at least one banana every day of my life. After reading this, you’ll never look at a banana in the same way again.

Bananas contain three natural sugars – sucrose, fructose and glucose combined with fiber. A banana gives an instant, sustained and substantial boost of energy. Research has proven that just two bananas provide enough energy for a strenuous 90-minute workout. No wonder the banana is the number one fruit with the world’s leading athletes. But energy isn’t the only way a banana can help us keep fit. It can also help overcome or prevent a substantial number of illnesses and conditions, making it a must to add to our daily diet.

Depression:
According to a recent survey undertaken by MIND amongst people suffering from depression, many felt much better after eating a banana. This is because bananas contain tryptophan, a type of protein that the body converts into serotonin, known to make you relax, improve your mood and generally make you feel happier.

PMS:
Forget the pills – eat a banana. The vitamin B620it contains regulates blood glucose levels, which can affect your mood.

Anemia:
High in iron, bananas can stimulate the production of hemoglobin in the blood and so helps in cases of anemia.

Blood Pressure:
This unique tropical fruit is extremely high in potassium yet low in salt, making it perfect to beat blood pressure. So much so, the US Food and Drug Administration has just allowed the banana industry to make official claims for the fruit’s ability to reduce the risk of blood pressure and stroke.

Brain Power:
200 students at a Twickenham (Middlesex) school were helped through their exams this year by eating bananas at breakfast, break, and lunch in a bid to boost their brain power. Research has shown that the potassium-packed fruit can assist learning by making pupils more alert.

Constipation:
High in fiber, including bananas in the diet can help restore normal bowel action, helping to overcome the problem without resorting to laxatives.

Hangovers:
One of the quickest ways of curing a hangover is to make a banana milkshake, sweetened with honey. The banana calms the stomach and, with the help of the honey, builds up depleted blood sugar levels, while the milk soothes and re-hydrates your system.

Heartburn:
Bananas have a natural ant acid effect in the body, so if you suffer from heartburn, try eating a banana for soothing relief.

Morning Sickness:
Snacking on bananas between meals helps to keep blood sugar levels up and avoid morning sickness.

Mosquito bites:
Before reaching for the insect bite cream, try rubbing the affected area with the inside of a banana skin. Many people find it amazingly successful at reducing swelling and irritation.

Nerves: Bananas are high in B vitamins that help calm the nervous system.

Overweight and20at work?
Studies at the Institute of Psychology in Austria found pressure at work leads to gorging on comfort food like chocolate and crisps. Looking at 5,000 hospital patients, researchers found the most obese were more likely to be in high-pressure jobs. The report concluded that, to avoid panic-induced food cravings, we need to control our blood sugar levels by snacking on high carbohydrate foods every two hours to keep levels steady.

Ulcers:
The banana is used as the dietary food against intestinal disorders because of its soft texture and smoothness. It is the only raw fruit that can be eaten without distress in over-chronicler cases. It also neutralizes over-acidity and reduces irritation by coating the lining of the stomach.

Temperature control:
Many other cultures see bananas as a ‘ cooling ‘ fruit that can lower both the physical and emotional temperature of expectant mothers. In Thailand , for example, pregnant women eat bananas to ensure their baby is born with a cool temperature.

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD): Bananas can help SAD sufferers because they contain the natural mood Enhancer tryptophan.

Smoking &Tobacco Use:
Bananas can also help people trying to give up smoking. The B6, B12 they contain, as well as the potassium and magnesium found in them, help the body recover from the effects of nicotine withdrawal.

Stress:
Potassium is a vital mineral, which helps normalize the heartbeat, sends oxygen to the brain and regulates your body’s water balance. When we are stressed, our metabolic rate rises, thereby reducing our potassium levels. These can be rebalanced with the help of a high-potassium banana snack.

Strokes:
According to research in The New England Journal of Medicine, eating bananas as part of a regular diet can cut the risk of death by strokes by as much as 40%!

Warts:
Those keen on natural alternatives swear that if you w ant to kill off a wart, take a piece of banana skin and place it on the wart, with the yellow side out. Carefully hold the skin in place with a plaster or surgical tape!
Recently, in Doctor Gotts column, he mentioned using the inner part of the banana peel to rub on any psoriasis…gotta try it!!!

So, a banana really is a natural remedy for many ills. When you compare it to an apple, it has four times the protein, twice the carbohydrate, three times the phosphorus, five times the vitamin A and iron, and twice the other vitamins and minerals. It is also rich in potassium and is one of the best value foods around So maybe its time to change that well-known phrase so that we say, ‘ A banana a day keeps the doctor away! ‘

This does not make any sense to me.How can over 1000 people just be forgotten?

There are many people who will be able to relate quickly to a letter that I have been sent. I don’t think any of us want to create problems but we do feel our point of view is disrespected. I am sure I’m not the only one who wants to get on with peace -loving members of every faith but not with any fanatical wing of any religion.  I’ll share the letter with you …

.One Pissed off Canadian Housewife
This is very good PLEASE read….

Thought you might like to read this letter
to the editor. Ever notice how some people

just seem to know how to write a letter?

This one surely does!

This was written by a Canadian woman, but oh how
it also applies to the
U.S.A. , U.K. and Australia .

THIS ONE PACKS A FIRM PUNCH

Written by a housewife in New Brunswick , to
her local newspaper. This is one ticked off lady…

“Are we fighting a war on terror or aren’t we? Was
it or was it not, started by Islamic people who

brought it to our shores on
September 11, 2001
and have continually threatened to do so since?

Were people from all over the world, not brutally murdered
that day, in downtown
Manhattan , across the Potomac from
the capitol of the
USA and in a field in Pennsylvania ?

Did nearly three thousand men, women and children die a horrible, burning or crushing death that day, or didn’t they?

Do you think I care about four U. S. Marines pissing on some dead Taliban insurgents?

And I’m supposed to care that a few Taliban were

claiming to be tortured by a justice system of a

nation they are fighting against in a brutal Insurgency.

I’ll care about the Koran when the fanatics in the Middle
East, start caring about the Holy Bible, the mere belief

of which, is a crime punishable by beheading in Afghanistan .

I’ll care when these thugs tell the world they are
sorry for hacking off Nick Berg’s head, while Berg

screamed through his gurgling slashed throat.

I’ll care when the cowardly so-called insurgents
in
Afghanistan , come out and fight like men,
instead of disrespecting their own religion by

hiding in Mosques and behind women and children.

I’ll care when the mindless zealots who blow
themselves up in search of Nirvana, care about the

innocent children within range of their suicide Bombs.

I’ll care when the Canadian media stops pretending that
their freedom of Speech on stories, is more important than

the lives of the soldiers on the ground or their families waiting

at home, to hear about them when something happens.

In the meantime, when I hear a story about a
CANADIAN soldier roughing up an Insurgent

terrorist to obtain information, know this:

I don’t care.

When I see a wounded terrorist get shot in the
head when he is told not to move because he

might be booby-trapped, you can take it to the bank:

I don’t care. Shoot him again.

When I hear that a prisoner, who was issued a Koran and a prayer mat, and fed ‘special’ food, that is paid for by my tax dollars, is complaining that his holy book is being ‘mishandled,’ you can absolutely believe, in your heart of hearts:

I don’t care.

And oh, by the way, I’ve noticed that sometimes
it’s spelled ‘Koran’ and other times ‘Quran.’

Well, Jimmy Crack Corn you guessed it.

I don’t care!!

Lesson 1: A man is getting into the shower just as his wife is finishing up her shower, when the doorbell rings. The wife quickly wraps herself in a towel and runs downstairs. When she opens the door, there stands Bob, the next-door neighbor. Before she says a word, Bob says, ‘I’ll give you $800 to drop that towel..’ After thinking for a moment, the woman drops her towel and stands naked in front of Bob, after a few seconds, Bob hands her $800 and leaves. The woman wraps back up in the towel and goes back upstairs. When she gets to the bathroom, her husband asks, ‘Who was that?’ ’It was Bob the next door neighbor,’ she replies. ’Great,’ the husband says, ‘did he say anything about the $800 he owes me?’ Moral of the story: If you share critical information pertaining to credit and risk with your shareholders in time, you may be in a position to prevent avoidable exposure. Lesson 2: A priest offered a Nun a lift. She got in and crossed her legs, forcing her gown to reveal a leg. The priest nearly had an accident. After controlling the car, he stealthily slid his hand up her leg. The nun said, ‘Father, remember Psalm 129?’ The priest removed his hand. But, changing gears, he let his hand slide up her leg again. The nun once again said, ‘Father, remember Psalm 129?’ The priest apologized ‘Sorry sister but the flesh is weak.’ Arriving at the convent, the nun sighed heavilyand went on her way. On his arrival at the church, the priest rushed to look up Psalm 129.. It said, ‘Go forth and seek, further up, you will find glory.’ Moral of the story:If you are not well informed in your job, you might miss a great opportunity. Lesson 3: A sales rep, an administration clerk, and the manager are walking to lunch when they find an antique oil lamp. They rub it and a Genie comes out.The Genie says, ‘I’ll give each of you just one wish.”Me first! Me first!’ says the admin clerk. ‘I want to be in the Bahamas, driving a speedboat, without a care in the world.’Puff! She’s gone. ’Me next! Me next!’ says the sales rep. ‘I want to be in Hawaii , relaxing on the beach with my personal masseuse, an endless supply of Pina Coladas and the love of my life.’ Puff! He’s gone. ’OK, you’re up,’ the Genie says to the manager. The manager says, ‘I want those two back in the office afterlunch…’ Moral of the story:Always let your boss have the first say… Lesson 4 An eagle was sitting on a tree resting, doing nothing. A small rabbit saw the eagle and asked him, ‘Can I also sit like you and do nothing?’The eagle answered: ‘Sure, why not.’ So, the rabbit sat on the ground below the eagle and rested. All of a sudden, a fox appeared, jumped on the rabbit and ate it. Moral of the story:To be sitting and doing nothing, you must be sitting very, very high up. Lesson 5 A turkey was chatting with a bull. ’I would love to be able to get to the top of that tree’ sighed the turkey, ‘but I haven’t got the energy..”Well, why don’t you nibble on some of my droppings?’ replied the bull. They’re packed with nutrients..’ The turkey pecked at a lump of dung, and found it actually gave him enough strength to reach the lowest branch of the tree. The next day, after eating some more dung, he reached the second branch. Finally after a fourth night, the turkey was proudly perched at the top of the tree. He was promptly spotted by a farmer, who shot him out of the tree. Moral of the story:Bull Shit might get you to the top, but it won’t keep you there….

Old Age Is NOT For Sissies

A little girl was sitting on her grandfather’s lap as he
read her a bedtime story. From time to time, she would take
her eyes off the book and reach up to touch his wrinkled
cheek. She was alternately stroking her own cheek, then his
again. Finally she spoke up, “Grandpa, did God make you?”

“Yes, sweetheart,” he answered. “God made me a long time
ago.”

“Oh,” she paused. “Grandpa, did God make me too?”

“Yes, indeed, honey,” he said. “God made you just a little
while ago.”

Feeling their respective faces again, she observed, “God’s
getting better at it, isn’t he?”

Spanish News

There is growing concern among church members in the area about people claiming to be Church of England vicars and carrying out “weddings” and “wedding blessings” when they are not officially recognized or qualified for the task.

At a recent annual synod of the Church of England chaplaincies in Spain and Portugal which met at Orihuela Costa synod members were told about people who claimed to be vicars and able to do Church of England weddings in Spain, when in fact they were not even priests.

It was also reported that some wedding organizers in Spain regularly hire actors to carry out what are in fact fake wedding blessing services. Only properly ordained clergy licensed by the Church of England’s Bishop in Europe, Rt Rev Dr. Geoffrey Rowell, should perform Church of England weddings or wedding blessings.

Rev Christopher Scargill, the Torrevieja Church of England Chaplain whose team hosted the synod said; “We actually had a case recently in the Torrevieja area where a wedding venue was advertising Church of England weddings, but the man who was carrying them out wasn’t ordained as a Church of England priest and had no right to do so. I took this up with the wedding venue and they have agreed to stop calling these “Church of England” weddings, though I think they plan to call them “English” weddings, whatever that may mean.

“I would urge couples who want to get married or have their wedding blessed in a Church of England ceremony to contact the local chaplain or Priest-in-Charge to ensure that the ceremony is conducted by someone authorised to do so. Contact details are available on the Church of England Diocese in Europe website or on our own Chaplaincy of St. Peter and St. Paul, Torrevieja website.”

Mr Scargill added; “If you have been married by one of these unauthorised people you may need to take legal advice to confirm that your marriage is properly valid under Spanish and British law.”

For further information contact the Torrevieja chaplain Rev Christopher Scargill, Tel. 966925205 Email revdcms@gmail.com or the Diocese in Europe communications officer Rev Paul Needle Tel             (0034) 662 482 944       paul.needle@churchofengland.org

The day’s Podcast is always an interesting journey with the story of the day’s music over the years…..and there are some very interesting stories about the music of the day.1987, Ben E King was at No.1 in the UK singles chart with ‘Stand By Me.’ The track was first released in 1961 and became a hit in 1987 after being featured in the film ‘Stand By Me.’

I do like routine. Is this an age thing or have I always been the same? No. I think I’ve been into planning for a long time and I’ve kept the habit. I like to find the best the best way to do something and then consolidate on good practice. The habits then have become my work pattern and I am usually very well prepared for whatever I must do. When I am working for a radio station I have everything prepared on my own website and then travel to where they should be using technology well. This hasn’t always been the case. Radio is not just about fame. It certainly isn’t about fortune. Of course, it’s nice to have a name and be recognised but I would say I have enjoyed more meeting my listeners and then knowing they have liked something I have done. Conversely, when a listener has hinted on how I could do something better or differently I have always tried to include their idea when practical.

Well, I’m trying to find new ideas and ways to improve what I do. The podcasts will become ever more relevant as they will eventually link to car radios. The technology is here, but not yet in Spain,  and as it becomes more accessible the podcasts can take another major step forward. To this end I have been looking to introduce other podcaster/presenters onto my site. My first major producer has been Paul Freeman and his podcasts cover quizzes and travelogues which will introduce various parts of Spain to the world. Paul’s already doing a great job with these and the hits on his pages are growing. Thanks, Paul, and well done! I hope you are getting the same buzz out of making them as I do looking at the hits increasing daily…..for those in the know….the eagles have landed!

A tough looking group of bikers were riding when they saw a woman about to jump off a bridge, so they stopped. The leader, a big burly man, gets off his bike and says,”What are you doing?”"I’m going to commit suicide,” she says. While he didn’t want to appear insensitive, he didn’t want to miss an opportunity either, so he asked… “Well, before you jump, why don’t you give me a kiss?” So she does… And it was a long, deep, lingering kiss.
After she’s finished, the biker says, “Wow! That was the best kiss I’ve ever had! That’s a real talent you are wasting. You could be famous. Why in the world would you want to commit suicide?” ”My parents don’t like me dressing up like a girl……..”.
The authorities think she may have been pushed.

WILL EDUCATING VICTIMS NOT INCREASING PENALTIES REDUCE CRIME?

In a joint analysis between the Universidad Miguel Hernández and the Ayuntamiento de Elche to try to find a solution to prevent crime, a survey of street gangs has resulted in the notion that it is more important to “educate society and the victim, rather than increasing the penalties for offenders to reduce crime”. There was also a serious lack of knowledge and education regarding more modern crimes such as those which take place on the internet and the virtual world.

The study has been carried out over the last seven years and featured interviews and monitoring of around 800 young people, lawyers, psychologists, criminologists, and police investigators are part of the Centro Crímina team, under the guidance of Fernando Miró, Professor of Criminal Law at the University and a Judge of the Provincial Court of Alicante.

The arrest was made possible by the increased collaboration with the local neighbourhood watch groups and the police, who found the man after he was reportedly sleeping in unauthorised buildings in the town.

WOMAN SUFFERS SERIOUS BURNS AT HOME

A 55 year old woman was admitted to the burns unit of Alicante Hospital after suffering an accident with a wood burning fire at her home in Catral this weekend.

The victim tried to light the fire by spraying the wood with alcohol, causing a blaze that resulted in serious burns to her face, chest, side and arm of first, second and third degree.

ROJALES TO WELCOME HOTELS

The town hall of Rojales has amended their general plan, which will now allow for the building of hotels on land in the municipality.

The aim of the plan is to diversify the availability of land to try to encourage tourism for those who want a break away from the sea and would prefer to holiday inland. Developers will also now be able to build higher properties than previously allowed.

ELCHE GETS GRANT FOR FOREIGNERS

The award was announced by the councillor for social action, Antonio Luis Martínez Pujalte, and will be used to develop policies for reception and integration of immigrants and to enhance educational efforts for foreign nationals.

The day’s Podcast is always an interesting journey with the story of the day’s music over the years…..and there are some very interesting stories about the music of the day.1963, The Beatles drove through the night from Liverpool to London to appear on the live lunchtime BBC radio program “Parade of the Pops.” Performing ‘Love Me Do’ and ‘Please Please Me’, the appearance lasted just over 4 minutes. They then drove another 180 mile trip back north for their performance that night at the Swimming Baths, Doncaster, Yorkshire.

Life is as hectic as it could be. A warm welcome to George and mary who have now arrived at our house and will be looking after Tinker. I will try to finish this blog later in the day but I know I will be very busy!

Today’s podcast is a memory from my days on Cool Fm when I would get up bright and early to run what I developed as the Music Club. It was around that time that we had a ton of text messages to keep me company every time I went on air. Up til this time I had always interacted with my listeners by telephone and I still find this the nicest option. To hear and speak with our listeners gives me a buzz although the arrival of each text shows interest is being taken. Nowadays, the Facebook pages are also there to distract the DJ and I suppose it is why so many programmes are delivered bland and automated. It is difficult to communicate properly at speed in each of the various channels but the text messages certainly cannot convey a lot in the way of feelings! Now a tactless e-mail is a bit different…..OK. I have to be up at the crack of dawn tomorrow so bed is calling……..

The Day’s Events 20  February

1673 – The first recorded wine auction took place in London. Why?

1809 – The U.S. Supreme Court ruled the power of the federal government was greater than that of any individual state. I would agree that the whole must always be bigger than a part

1815 – The USS Constitution, under Captain Charles Stewart fought the British shipsCyane and Levant. The Constitution captures both, but lost the Levant after encountering a British squadron. The Constitution and the Cyane returned to New York safely on May 15, 1815. The Cyane was purchased and became the USS Cyane. Didn’t the Brits have the Battle of Waterloo to worry about?

1839 – The U.S. Congress prohibited dueling in the District of Columbia. They should have gone the whole hog and banned it everywhere…

1872 – Silas Noble and J.P. Cooley patented the toothpick manufacturing machine. A toothpick machine?

1962 – John Glenn made space history when he orbited the world three times in 4 hours, 55 minutes. He was the first American to orbit the Earth. He was aboard the Friendship 7 Mercury capsule. What a brave man

1993 – Two ten-year-old boys were charged by police in Liverpool, England, in the abduction and death of a toddler. The two boys were later convicted. Many people are still upset that the two murderers of the toddler, Jamie Bolger, were given new identities and protection. One has recently been in trouble with the police again. The family of poor Jamie Bolger has never really recovered from this horrific act.

2002 – In Reqa Al-Gharbiya, Egypt, a fire raced through a train killing at least 370 people and injuring at least 65. This makes awful reading
