Success is the ability to go from failure to failure without losing your enthusiasm.
- Sir Winston ChurchillThere are only two rules for being successful. One, figure out exactly what you want to do, and two, do it.
- Mario Cuomo
Knowing is not enough; we must apply. Willing is not enough; we must do.

The Olympics have gone up a gear over the weekend with GB standing proudly at nation number 3 behind billions of Chinese and millions of Americans. With such a relatively small number in the ranks it is a fantastic achievement by team GB and the crowd. I’m still not sure where I stand on the inclusion of Tennis but Murray’s win in the singles followed by the mixed doubles was very acceptable. A fine win, also, for Ben Ainsley in the sailing and lots of medals elsewhere.I have yet to see where Spain have achieved but it will be miniscule compared with GB.
Let’s start with a few more shots of Stratford on Avon…..

Drinking, Gambling, and Golf

A man was walking in the city, when he was accosted by a
particularly dirty and shabby-looking bum who asked him for
a couple of dollars for dinner.

The man took out his wallet, extracted two dollars, and
asked, “If I gave you this money, will you take it and buy
whiskey?”

“No, I stopped drinking years ago,” the bum said.

“Will you use it to gamble?”

“I don’t gamble. I need everything I can get just to stay
alive.”

“Will you spend the money on greens fees at a golf course?”

“Are you NUTS! I haven’t played golf in 20 years!”

The man said, “Well, I’m not going to give you two dollars.
Instead, I’m going to take you to my home for a terrific
dinner cooked by my wife.”

The bum was astounded.

“Won’t your wife be furious with you for doing that? I know
I’m dirty, and I probably smell pretty bad.”

The man replied, “That’s okay. I just want her to see what a
man looks like who’s given up drinking, gambling, and golf.”

BRITISH NEWSPAPERS

Commenting on a complaint from a Mr. Arthur Purdey about a large gas bill, a spokesman for North West Gas said, ‘We agree it was rather high for the time of year. It’s possible Mr. Purdey has been charged for the gas used up during the explosion that destroyed his house.’
(The Daily Telegraph)

Police reveal that a woman arrested for shoplifting had a whole salami in her underwear. When asked why, she said it was because she was missing her Italian boyfriend.
(The Manchester Evening News)

Irish police are being handicapped in a search for a stolen van, because they cannot issue a description. It’s a Special Branch vehicle and they don’t want the public to know what it looks like.
(The Guardian)

A young girl who was blown out to sea on a set of inflatable teeth was rescued by a man on an inflatable lobster. A coast guard spokesman commented, ‘This sort of thing is all too common’.
(The Times)

At the height of the gale, the harbourmaster radioed a coast guard and asked him to estimate the wind speed. He replied he was sorry, but he didn’t have a gauge. However, if it was any help, the wind had just blown his Land Rover off the cliff.
(Aberdeen Evening Express)

Mrs Irene Graham of Thorpe Avenue, Boscombe, delighted the audience with her reminiscence of the German prisoner of war who was sent each week to do her garden. He was repatriated at the end of 1945, she recalled -’He’d always seemed a nice friendly chap, but when the crocuses came up in the middle of our lawn in February 1946, they spelt out ‘Heil Hitler.”

The Day’s Events 6th August

1787 – The Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia began. The articles of the U.S. Constitution draft were to be debated. Cheese was on the menu

1879 – The first Australian rules football game to be played at night took place at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. The game was to promote the introduction of electricity to the city of Melbourne. Fair enough

1890 – The electric chair was used for the first time when Auburn State Prison in New York executed convicted murderer William Kemmler. I’m afraid it was probably necessary

1914 – Austria-Hungary declared war against Russia. Serbia declared war against Germany. All about treaties

1926 – Gertrude Ederle became the first American woman to swim the English Channel. She was 19 years old at the time. The swim took her 14 1/2 hours. Amazing

1962 – Jamaica became an independent dominion within the British Commonwealth. Pity as they have so many good sprinters

1981 – Lee Trevino was disqualified from the PGA Championship in Duluth, GA when he had his scorecard signed by Tom Weiskopf instead of himself.  There are some silly rules in golf in my opinion. A bit of commonsense could be an advantage

1985 – The 40th anniversary of the Hiroshima atomic bombing brought tens of thousands of Japanese and foreigners to Hiroshima. I hope it wasn’t too traumatic

1990 – The U.N. Security Council ordered a worldwide trade embargo with Iraq. The embargo was to punish Iraq for invading Kuwait. Sorry but Iraq needed punishing. However, the sad thing is the ordinary person is hit hardest

1994 – Randolph County High School, in Wedowee, AL, was destroyed by fire. The principle’s stand against interracial dating had caused much tension in the school.  I disagree with the Principal but it was silly burning the building

1995 – Thousands of glowing lanterns were set afloat in rivers in Hiroshima, Japan, on the 50th anniversary of the first atomic bombing. I hope the pain is easing for the Japanese people

1996 – NASA announced the discovery of evidence of primitive life on Mars. The evidence came in the form of a meteorite that was found in Antarctica. The meteorite was believed to have come from Mars and contained a fossil. I’ll believe this when I see it

1998 – Former White House intern Monica Lewinsky spent 8 1/2 hours testifying before a grand jury about her relationship with U.S. President Clinton. Did it really need to take this long?
