I have long since come to believe that people never mean half of what they say, and that it is best to disregard their talk and judge only their actions. – Dorothy Day, 1897-1980

“A walk of 1000 miles starts with the first step” – Ghandi

—————————————————————————————

The day’s Podcast is always an interesting listen. 1955, on tour with Hank Snow’s All Star Jamboree, Elvis Presley played three shows at the Municipal Auditorium in New Orleans, Louisiana. Sun Records had just released Elvis’ fourth single, ‘Baby, Let’s Play House.

The weather is very nice today and a change from the last day or so. However, the rest of Spain has a very mixed bag of snow, rain, flooding and then us down on the coast enjoying the sunshine. Yes. I do realise we are very fortunate.

I watched a bit of the Manchester derby last night and the season mi9ght yet have a few twists and turns before the cups are awarded.

In 1931 , The Empire State Building in New York was dedicated and opened. It was 102 stories tall and was the tallest building in the world at the time. I ask myself why we need such high buildings? We have the Bali Hotel near us in La Cala de Finestrat. This, I’m told, is the highest hotel in Europe and it looks as if this could well be true. As I hate heights I will not be going to see the top of the building. There is a race to the top of the building each year by a group of runners who obviously want to push their bodies to the li mits of their endurance. I have walked up 14 flights of stairs in Benidorm and came the closest I’ve been to a myocardiac infarction. Mind you, I think I’d prefer to walk up the stairs than be stuck in one of those little lifts that go up the outside of the building. Fancy getting stuck in one of those. Meanwhile, the building of these high rise buildings goes on. Not far from the Bali Hotel we have the Twin Towers which look enormous. Already a number of construction workers have fallen to their deaths on this building. Will I be visiting the top floor? You can work that one out for yourself..

These are actual comments made on students’ report cards by teachers in the New York City public school system. All teachers were reprimanded (but, boy, are these funny!)

1. Since my last report, your child has reached rock bottom and has started to dig.

2. I would not allow this student to breed.

3. Your child has delusions of adequacy.

4. Your son is depriving a village somewhere of an idiot. (my favorite…)

5. Your son sets low personal standards and then consistently fails to achieve them.

6. The student has a ‘full six-pack’ but lacks the plastic thing to hold it all together.

7. This child has been working with glue too much.

8. When your daughter’s IQ reaches 50, she should sell.

9. The gates are down, the lights are flashing, but the train isn’t coming..

10. If this student were any more stupid, he’d have to be watered twice a week.

11. It’s impossible to believe the sperm that created this child beat out 1,000,000 others.

12. The wheel is turning but the hamster is definitely dead.

These are actual comments made by 16 Police Officers. The comments were taken off actual police car videos around the country:
Cops

1. “You know, stop lights don’t come any redder than the one you just went through.”

2. “Relax, the handcuffs are tight because they’re new. They’ll stretch after you wear them a while.”

3. “If you take your hands off the car, I’ll make your birth certificate a worthless document.”

4. “If you run, you’ll only go to jail tired.”

5. “Can you run faster than 1200 feet per second? Because that’s the speed of the bullet that’ll be chasing you.”  (LOVE IT)

6. “You don’t know how fast you were going? I guess that means I can write anything I want to on the ticket, huh?”

7. “Yes, sir, you can talk to the shift supervisor, but I don’t think it will help. Oh, did I mention that I’m the shift supervisor?”

8. “Warning! You want a warning? O.K, I’m warning you not to do that again or I’ll give you another ticket.”

9. “The answer to this last question will determine whether you are drunk or not. Was Mickey Mouse a cat or a dog?”

10. “Fair? You want me to be fair? Listen, fair is a place where you go to ride on rides, eat cotton candy and corn dogs and step in monkey poop.”

11. “Yeah, we have a quota. Two more tickets and my wife gets a toaster oven.”

12. “In God we trust; all others we run through NCIC.”  ( National Crime Information Center )

13. “Just how big were those ‘two beers’ you say you had?”

14. “No sir, we don’t have quotas anymore. We used to, but now we’re allowed to write as many tickets as we can.”

15. “I’m glad to hear that the Chief (of Police) is a personal friend of yours. So you know someone who can post your bail.”

AND THE WINNER IS.

16. “You didn’t think we give pretty women tickets? You’re right, we don’t.. Sign here.”

Banned from Sainsbury’s.

I didn’t like shopping there anyway. Yesterday I was at my local Sainsbury’s store buying a large bag of Winalot dog food for my loyal pet and was in the checkout queue when a woman behind me asked if I had a dog.  What did she think I had an elephant? So, since I’m retired and have little to do, on impulse I told her that no, I didn’t have a dog, I was starting the Winalot Diet again. I added that I probably shouldn’t, because I ended up in hospital last time, but I’d lost 2 stone before I woke up in intensive care with tubes coming out of most of my orifices and needles in both arms.

I told her that it was essentially a perfect diet and that the way that it works is to load your pockets with Winalot nuggets and simply eat one or two every time you feel hungry. The food is nutritionally complete so it works well and I was going to try it again. (I have to
mention here that practically everyone in queue was now enthralled with my story.)

Horrified, she asked me if I ended up in intensive care because the dog food poisoned me I told her no, I ran across the road to sniff an Irish Setter’s rear end and a car hit me. I thought the guy behind her was going to have a heart attack he was laughing so hard.  ….I’m now banned from Sainsbury’s. …..better watch what you ask retired people. They have all the time in the world to think of daft things to say.

The wedding ceremony took place at the Aladdin Hotel in Las Vegas and although the marriage license was only $15, the wedding cake cost $3,500. The day’s Podcast is always an interesting listen. 1976, The Who’s drummer Keith Moon paid nine cab drivers to block-off both ends of a New York street so he could throw the contents of his hotel room out of the window. He was always up for something like that

So here we are at the last day of April. The weather is still very mixed although there was a bit of sun about. After the morning trip to Benidorm where the town was packed we went to knock a few balls at the Las Rejas driving range. It got a little cold and so we headed back to the warmth of our homes.

There were plenty of `people walking on the Levante front at Benidorm and there always seems to be something unusual to see whilst you’re in town. Today we saw two `people in very different places who obviously suffer from very unusual syndromes whereby they don’t gro0w very tall. One was a lady who was tiny yet obviously quite old and the other was a very small man being pushed in a wheelchair. Very interesting yet very sad at the same time.

Don Woods gave me a great insight into the wonderful events in Liverpool where giant puppets were the order of the day.  Elsewhere in Britain there is flooding at the same time that there is a hosepipe ban in place. Don gives us his take on these problems

Meanwhile, I had a very interesting podcast to make with Neil Colbourne. Thje biggest issue we discussed was the fact that children as young as 4 are being excluded from scholl due to inappropriate behaviour of a sexual nature. Personally, I see the biggest factors as being the lack of proper parenting often through the father going awol and the other is the influence of things seen through the television. I have the feeling many will find the podcast interesting.

Dating in 1957

It was a hot Saturday evening in the summer of 1957 and Fred had a date with Peggy Sue. He arrived at her house and rang the bell.

“Oh, come on in!” Peggy Sue’s mother said as she welcomed Fred.

“Have a seat in the living room. Would you like something to drink?  Lemonade? Iced tea?”
“Iced tea, please,” Fred said. Mom brought the iced tea.”So, what are you and Peggy planning to do tonight?” she asked.”Oh, probably catch a movie, and then maybe grab a bite to eat at the malt shop, maybe take a walk on the beach…”"Peggy likes to screw, you know,” Mom informed him.”Uh…really?” Fred replied, with raised eyebrows.

“Oh, yes!” the mother continued. “When she goes out with her friends, that’s all they do!”

“Is that so?” asked Fred, incredulous.

“Yes,” said the mother. “As a matter of fact, she’d screw all night if we let her!”

“Well, thanks for the tip,” Fred said as he began thinking about alternate plans for the evening.A moment later, Peggy Sue came down the stairs looking pretty as a  picture wearing a pink blouse and full circle skirt, and with her hair tied back in a bouncy ponytail. She greeted Fred.

“Have fun, kids,” the mother said as they left.Half an hour later, a completely disheveled Peggy Sue burst into the  house and slammed the front door behind her.

“The Twist, Mom!” she angrily yelled at her mother. “The damned dance is called the Twist!”

The day’s Podcast is always an interesting listen. 1963, Publicist Andrew Oldham and agent Eric Easton signed a management deal with The Rolling Stones after buying the rights to the bands first recordings for £90. They also persuade keyboard player Ian Stewart to drop out of the line up and become the bands road manager, (and still play piano at the back of the stage)

The weather today in Spain has been more like a dank and grey dismal day in Cornwall. I hate these days and even more so after spending such a long time in California. I miss the sunshine already but I have to remember we are still in Spring and we always have the odd colder day at this time of the year. The problems are exacerbated by the fact that we watch the UK TV and miss the local news. It drives me mad. We know the weather forecast for Manchester. We know the weather forecast for Cornwall. We know the weather for most of England but we have no idea what is happening at the bottom of the road. It drives me mad. I’ve just had to watch Britain’s Got Talent. Yes there were a few decent acts but it is the Godlike status now given to the panellists and the ultimate in Gods-Simon Cowell. There were acts practically wetting themselves as they were being given the judgements. Children who can sing and dance. Yes I’m all for it but don’t let’s lose control over our bodily functions just yet!

The day’s Podcast is always an interesting listen. 1958, Alan Feed’s Big Beat Show played 2 shows at the Central High School Auditorium in Kalamazoo, Michigan. The tour featured Jerry Lee Lewis, Chuck Berry, Frankie Lymon, Buddy Holly, The Diamonds, Billy Ford, Danny & The Juniors,
The Chantels, Larry Williams, Screaming Jay Hawkins and The Pastels

I’ve changed my phone and brought myself screaming and up to date. I really would be able to survive with a machine that just answered and made phone calls and messages but no……it does just about everything except make a pot of tea for me….Mind you, I needed a pot of tea this afternoon after the shock I got from finding a dead cat on our property. I had whiffed a bad pong and wondered what it was. As we’d been away for a day we hadn’t noticed any smell but……..Anyway, I went to investigate and I found this poor little mite that had choked itself trying to get through a fence. I have to say I was very upset as much for the fact that I had no idea where the poor little mite had come from. At first, I was worried in case it was a cat belonging to my neighbour Patricia. Thankfully, it wasn’t hers but nevertheless I still was very sad after the event.

In Barcelona yesterday, around 450 people took to the streets of the Catalan capital, in a march to defend the rights of prostitutes to practice their business in the street. The rally has been promoted by the platform ‘Outraged Prostitutes’, which brings together women engaged in prostitution, groups, organizations and neighbours to reflect their opposition to amending the ordinance of civility, which will take effect in summer to toughen penalties to prostitutes and clients and to prohibit street sex.

A total of 450 Rottweiler dogs will meet from Friday until Sunday in Castellar del Vallès, in Barcelona, to participate in the IFR World Rottweiler Show, the world championship beauty pageant for the breed. The championship is part of the events on the occasion of the declaration by the International Federation (IFR) that 2012 is the Year of the Rottweiler, a decade after the approval of Royal Decree declaring the Rottweiler breed potentially dangerous. The Rottweiler Club President of Spain (CRE), Peter Pujals, explained that the statement is intended to enhance the reputation of the breed in Spain, one of the world’s top experts, and show that the Rottweiler dogs are happy, intelligent and obedient.

IT’S WHAT YOU SCATTERI was at the corner grocery store buying some early potatoes… I noticed a small boy, delicate of bone and feature, ragged but clean, hungrily appraising a basket of freshly picked green peas.I paid for my potatoes but was also drawn to the display of fresh green peas. I am a pushover for creamed peas and new potatoes.Pondering the peas, I couldn’t help overhearing the conversation between Mr. Miller (the store owner) and the ragged boy next to me.’Hello Barry, how are you today?’

‘H’lo, Mr. Miller. Fine, thank ya. Jus’ admirin’ them peas. They sure look good’

‘They are good, Barry. How’s your Ma?’
‘Fine. Gittin’ stronger alla’ time.’
‘Good. Anything I can help you with?’
‘No, Sir. Jus’ admirin’ them peas.’
‘Would you like to take some home?’ asked Mr. Miller.

‘No, Sir. Got nuthin’ to pay for ‘em with.’

‘Well, what have you to trade me for some of those peas?’

‘All I got’s my prize marble here.’

‘Is that right? Let me see it’, said Miller.

‘Here ’tis. She’s a dandy.’

‘I can see that. Hmm mmm, only thing is this one is blue and I sort of go for red. Do you have a red one like this at home?’ the store owner asked.

‘Not zackley but almost.’

‘Tell you what. Take this sack of peas home with you and next trip this way let me look at that red marble’. Mr. Miller told the boy.

‘Sure will. Thanks Mr. Miller.’

Mrs. Miller, who had been standing nearby, came over to help me.

With a smile she said, ‘There are two other boys like him in our community, all three are in very poor circumstances. Jim just loves to bargain with them for peas, apples, tomatoes, or whatever.

When they come back with their red marbles, and they always do, he decides he doesn’t like red after all and he sends them home with a bag of produce for a green marble or an orange one, when they come on their next trip to the store.’

I left the store smiling to myself, impressed with this man. A short time later I moved to Colorado , but I never forgot the story of this man, the boys, and their bartering for marbles.

Several years went by, each more rapid than the previous one.  Just recently I had occasion to visit some old friends in that Idaho community and while I was there learned that Mr. Miller had died. They were having his visitation that evening and knowing my friends wanted to go, I agreed to accompany them. Upon arrival at the mortuary we fell into line to meet the relatives of the deceased and to offer whatever words of comfort we could.

Ahead of us in line were three young men. One was in an army uniform and the other two wore nice haircuts, dark suits and white shirts…all very professional looking. They approached Mrs. Miller, standing composed and smiling by her husband’s casket.

Each of the young men hugged her, kissed her on the cheek, spoke briefly with her and moved on to the casket. Her misty light blue eyes followed them as, one by one; each young man stopped briefly and placed his own warm hand over the cold pale hand in the casket. Each left the mortuary awkwardly, wiping his eyes.

Our turn came to meet Mrs. Miller. I told her who I was and reminded her of the story from those many years ago and what she had told me about her husband’s bartering for marbles. With her eyes glistening, she took my hand and led me to the casket.

‘Those three young men who just left were the boys I told you about.

They just told me how they appreciated the things Jim ‘traded’ them. Now, at last, when Jim could not change his mind about color or size….they came to pay their debt.’

‘We’ve never had a great deal of the wealth of this world,’ she confided, ‘but right now, Jim would consider himself the richest man in Idaho …’

With loving gentleness she lifted the lifeless fingers of her deceased husband. Resting underneath were three exquisitely shined red marbles.

The Moral:
We will not be remembered by our words, but by our kind deeds. Life is not measured by the breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath.

Today I wish you a day of ordinary miracles ~ A fresh pot of coffee you didn’t make yourself…

An unexpected phone call from an old friend…. Green stoplights on your way to work….

The fastest line at the grocery store….

A good sing-along song on the radio..

Your keys found right where you left them.

IT’S NOT WHAT YOU GATHER, BUT WHAT YOU SCATTER THAT TELLS WHAT KIND OF LIFE YOU HAVE LIVED!

The day’s Podcast is always an interesting journey with the story of the day’s music over the years…..and there are some very interesting stories about the music of the day. 1976, Customs officers on a train at the Russian/Polish Border detained David Bowie, after Nazi books and mementos were found in his luggage. Bowie claimed that the material was being used for research on a movie project about Nazi propaganda leader Joseph Paul Goebbels.

It was our Andrew’s birthday yesterday and so we spent the day in Valencia. We went to the airport to meet his flight from Bristol and then we spent a few hours chasing round his favourite haunts in the city before going for a bit to eat at a restaurant near the new Valencia football ground. This will not be ready for a year or two but already this is an up and coming part of the city because of the advent of the new stadium, Richard had come down from Bilbao and John was already in the city so we had our nuclear family together for a reunion for the day. We haven’t done this for a long while as Richard’s family has grown and Andrew has been abroad for a while. We went down to the port to see the Formula 1 track and have a walk right along the waterfront out to the furthest point possible. After the walk we stopped at the watering hole along the side of the port and there were a load of Atletico de Madrid fans in evidence as they were congregating before the UEFA semi-final against Valencia. As you can see the weather has been beautiful and we always love the trip up to Valencia. If you haven’t been for a visit to the city we thoroughly recommend a day on the bus or train or if you drive parking is not a huge problem. I have to admit we are lucky as our boys have a good local knowledge of the area.

A mechanic was removing a cylinder-head from the motor of a Deville when he spotted a well-known cardiologist in his shop.

The cardiologist was there waiting for the service manager to come and take a look at his bike when the mechanic shouted across theGarage.

“Hey, Doc, want to take a look at this?” The cardiologist, a bit surprised, walked over to where the Mechanic was working on the vehicle. The mechanic straightened up, wiped his hands on a rag and ask, “So Doc, look at this engine. I open its’ heart, take the valves out, repair any damage, and then put them back in, and when I finish, it works Just like new. So how come I make $39,675 a year and you get the really big bucks ($1,695,759) when you and I are doing basically the same work?”

The cardiologist paused, smiled and leaned over, then whispered
To the mechanic……….

“Try doing it with the Engine Running!”

The President of the European Central Bank, Mario Draghi, has praised the Spanish government´s moves to get its finances back in shape, but he was not so keen on the idea of reactivating purchases of sovereign debt. In an interview with El País newspaper, he said that, “Remarkable progress has been achieved and is being achieved,” and, “We have no reason to doubt the absolute commitment of the Spanish government to undertake the necessary reforms”. Meanwhile, the Senate has given the ‘green light’ without changes to the draft Financial Stability and Sustainability Law, which is definitively adopted by Parliament and will take effect immediately. Specifically, the Act received 155 votes in favour, 59 against and 5 abstentions.

In an attempt to calm the fears of students and teachers facing the prospect of cuts in education, the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport has said that although the implementation of an increase in fees for education that will save up to 1,542 million euro, they will allocate grants of up to 218 million euro in scholarships, although this figure will have to be paid by the autonomous governments, rather than central finances. Responding to criticism that the new measures will create a two tier education system, the response was that it, “fully guarantees equal opportunities for grounds of income”.

The European joint police force, EUROPOL, has issued a report warning that the terrorist group ETA are still recruiting members and gathering information on potential targets, despite the cessation of violence which came into force in October 2011. Although it is believed that there is no immediate threat from the terror group, nor do they have the current capability to attack, the group warn that they cannot rule out a return to action in the future.

In an almost startling reversal of practice, the current Interior Minister of Spain, Jorge Fernández Díaz of the ruling Partido Popular, has issued a statement that could be construed as praising the previous government for their actions on crime prevention. The minister has stated that the crime rate in Spain, which conveys the number of known criminal offenses in relation to the total population, was down slightly more than half a point in 2011, the last year of the socialist government of José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero. In this context, in 2011, there were 2,283,514 reported crimes, which gives involves a crime rate of 48.4 per 1,000 inhabitants, whilst in 2010, the rate was 48.9 per 1,000, a decrease of 0.6%. The Spanish crime rate is below the European average of 2009, the latest year of data provided by Eurostat, where Sweden leads with 151.9 offenses per thousand inhabitants, the EU average being 64.9 per thousand.

Going back to the financial situation though, it is not only health and education that are suffering cut backs this year. The city of Pamploma has announced that it will slash the budget for the San Fermin fiesta by a staggering 15%, although it is intended that any actual deficit will be met by additional sponsorship for the fiesta that includes the infamous “running of the bulls” street race. This year, the whole event will have to struggle with a paltry 952,000 euro budget from municipal funds.  via SpanishVida

The day’s Podcast is always an interesting journey with the story of the day’s music over the years…..and there are some very interesting stories about the music of the day.1966, Dusty Springfield was at No.1 on the UK singles chart with ‘You Don’t Have To Say You Love Me’, the singers only UK No.1.

A bad week for Spanish soccer as Real Madrid joined Barcelona in the exit department of the Champions League. I thought it was an interesting game and, on balance, I think Real deserved to win. They were sporting in defeat but Ronaldo and Kaka emulated Messi in missing their penalties in the final shoot out.Yes. I was disappointed because Spain needed a team in the final. Germany has one of the stronger economies and Spain would have had a small boost from being represented in the final. I watched the match in Valencia and my Spanish friends found it hard to believe I like both Spanish giants. I now have to rely on Valencia or Athletic de Bilbao to do Spain a favour. I’ll be thankful for small mercies and be glad that we’re able to share our son Andrew’s  birthday with him. As a bonus both John and Richard will be with us and it is the first time for ages that our nuclear family have been together. The weather is great and the family is spending quality time together….

This week will be a busy one for the port of Alicante, as it welcomes five cruise liners, with about 6,000 passengers, between Wednesday and Sunday.

The first arrival will be the from the Holland America Line company, bringing in 1,900 people to the city at 09:00 on Wednesday, where they will stay for some 8 hours.

Then, on Thursday, the “Thomson Destiny”, with 1,500 passengers will dock in the port and on Friday two ships will arrive within an hour of each other, the “Saga Pearl II”, carrying 446 passengers and the liner “Delphin”, with 470 people on board.

Both ships will dock next to the harbour station, which can handle more than 3,000 cruise passengers and has the possibility of simultaneous landings of different ships, through gateways.

The last to arrive will be the cruise ship “Aida Vita”, which will bring 1,500 passengers to visit Alicante, before being waved back off on her journey having been part of one of the busiest weeks in the history of the increasingly popular cruising destination.

A bloke starts his new job at the zoo and is given three tasks.

First is to clear the exotic fish pool of weeds.
As he does this a huge fish jumps out and bites him. To show who is boss, he beats it to death with a spade.
Realizing his employer won’t be best pleased he disposes of the fish by feeding it to the lions, as lions will eat anything.

Moving on to the second job of clearing out the ape house, he is attacked by the chimps that pelt him with unmentionable debris.
He swipes at two chimps with a spade killing them both. What can he do? Feed them to the lions, he says to himself, because lions eat anything…
He hurls the corpses into the lion enclosure.

He moves on to the last job which is to collect honey from the South American bees. As soon as he starts he is attacked by the bees. He grabs the spade and smashes the bees to a pulp.
By now he knows what to do and shovels them into the lions cage because lions eat anything.

Later that day a new lion arrives at the zoo. He wanders up to another lion and says “What’s the food like here?”

The lions say: “Absolutely brilliant! Today we had fish and chimps with mushy bees.”

The day’s Podcast is always an interesting journey with the story of the day’s music over the years…..and there are some very interesting stories about the music of the day. 1967, Just days after the completion of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, The Beatles embark upon their next project, recording the theme to ‘Magical Mystery Tour’ at Abbey Road studios in London.

Life is full of compromises and yesterday was definitely o0ne of those compromise days. My computers were definitely under the weather and the Yahoo servers were obviously playing up. My blog suddenly disappeared into the ethers and I wondered whether we’d ever meet again. I work from templates which I update during the day and at one point they just wouldn’t budge. It was almost as if the mainframe computers had decided to take a siesta.  These are very worrying times in the Valencian Community in general and the Costa Blanca in particular. The doctor told me today that the Community authorities are still not paying the suppliers and it wouldn’t be a huge surprise to see us being asked to pay for all medicines very soon. Of course, the man on the street seems more worried by the Chelsea team’s slender lead over Barcelona but the markets were in a frenzy again yesterday and the elections in Europe seem to be getting quite animated especially in France.
Paco at the Health Centre will be distraught. His beloved Barcelona were knocked out of the Champions League by Chelsea. To make matters worse Chelsea went down to 10 men, Messi missed a penalty and Torres scored…oh dear….not a good night and a terrible end to the season for this talented group of players. If it’s any consolation I don’t think they deserved to lose but that’s the nature of the game.

Rugby at La Villa
C.R.La Vila will host the quarter final match between C.R. La Vila and Getxo Artea, this Saturday, April 29th, at 12:30pm in the Villajoyosa Rugby Stadium. The local team hosts the match because they came 4th in the league and the Basque team was ranked 5th.

Due to the club’s dire economic situation- as explained through a letter to the fans and press by its President Jason Craig- coach Mark Hewitt’s team will be short of some key players this weekend. Jonathon Phipps, Jarrid Els, and Nathan Reid were all released at the end of February due to the club being unable to continue their payments beyond the regular season. Mark Poggi will also be absent as he has been called up by the Spanish 7’s for the IRB International Sevens tournament in Glasgow this weekend.

C.R. La Vila are undaunted by these losses as they know that during this season they have overcome some difficult challenges in the absence of other team members. There are many excellent players waiting for their chance to shine and who are eager to play the deciding game in front of their fans, showing that the title race is still alive and kicking.
On the other hand, Getxco Artea, led by Bryce Bevin, the former coach of C.R.La Vila, have finished the regular season in a surprising fifth place considering their recent promotion to the top league. This promises to be a thrilling duel in Villajoyosa, for a position in the semifinals which will be played in Valladolid on 6 May.
Entrance to the game on Sunday is 10eu, children under 12 are free. We look forward to seeing you all at the Villajoyosa stadium.

Schmit first got back together the previous December for the making of a Travis Tritt video of their song, ‘Take It Easy.’ The name of the album was taken from an earlier quote by Glen Frey, who responded to the question “When will the Eagles get back together?”I love their music

1997, U2′s ‘Pop Mart’ world tour kicked off at The Las Vegas San Boyd Stadium in front of 35,000 fans. The tour featured the largest video screen in the world and would visit 80 cities around the planet. I’ll bet this was impressive

Ozzy Osbourne became the 24th richest musician after earning an estimated £42m from his MTV show ‘The Osbournes.’ And Simon Fuller was said to have earned over £50m from sales of the ‘Pop Idol’ TV show. It does seem to suggest that traditional teaching and learning mightn’t be the best investment

2007, Aides to George Bush were told they couldn’t book a luxury five star hotel suite because Mick Jagger had already booked it during The Rolling Stones current world tour. Jagger had splashed out £3,600 a night for the suite at the five-star Imperial Hotel in Vienna, Austria, in advance of the band appearing in Vienna. The day’s Podcast is always an interesting journey with the story of the day’s music over the years…..and there are some very interesting stories about the music of the day. 1965, Wayne Fontana and the Mindbenders went to No.1 on the US singles chart with ‘Game Of Love’, a No.2 hit in the UK. Wayne took his name from DJ Fontana the Elvis Presley drummer.

There are those who say you shouldn’t keep looking back and that history is best left alone. I see things differently. For example, by looking at the day’s events in history you can see how things change dramatically over the years. In 1898 we see that Spain declared war on America. Obviously, the difference in the strength of each country has changed dramatically. Spain would not be able to challenge America in the current climate and would have to rely on international help otherwise there would be terrible consequences. I agree it is best not to dwell too long but there are lessons to be learned from history. Very small inconsequential lessons can be learned. For example, if we know it was showery at this time of the year last year then we shouldn’t be too disappointed if the same weather patterns are around today. I have to go out and, looking to my weather eye for guidance, I will certainly take a light coat………
…..it didn’t rain but the coat was quite necessary because the wind got up and it would have been a little cool walking yesterday morning. You probably might have guessed I have to work a little ahead of myself as I have other things to do. I try to work on the Internet in short bursts and get the messages out quickly enough to get back to other important parts of the day……..
Important news for UK Expat voters
Back in 1985, the Representation of the People Act extended the right to vote
in national elections to British citizens living overseas who had previously been
resident in the UK within the previous five years. This period was extended to
twenty years in 1989, but was reduced in 2000 to fifteen years with effect
from 1 April 2002. Specifically, the offending pieces of legislation are Section
of the People Act 1985, as amended by the Representation of the People
Act 2000.
This legislation is arbitrary, discriminatory, and serves no useful purpose. At
various times in the past the government has arbitrarily fixed the cut-off point
for British expat citizens’ voting rights at zero, five, twenty and fifteen years.
This is a “think-of-a-number” approach, rather than a reasoned and responsible
approach towards an important area of legislation.  Source

The day’s Podcast is always an interesting journey with the story of the day’s music over the years…..and there are some very interesting stories about the music of the day.   1967, At a ceremony held at the Playhouse Theatre in London, The Beatles were awarded three Ivor Novello awards for 1966: Best-selling British single ‘Yellow Submarine’, most-performed song ‘Michelle’, and next-most-performed song ‘Yesterday’. None of the Beatles attended and the winning songs were played by Joe Loss and his Orchestra. The lead vocal for ‘Michelle’ was sung by Ross MacManus, whose son would go on to become the professional musician Elvis Costello

What a day of mixed fortunes for Manchester where United seemed to be coasting against Everton and managed a draw and City beat Wolves 2-0. Wolves are relegated. Meanwhile, Barcelona lost to Real madrid who will now have won La Liga. then there’s that shower I support. They lost at home to West Brom for the first time in 45 years. If Kenny Dalglish doesn’t win the FA Cup my guess is he will be moved upstairs at Anfield and a new manager will be brought in. We had a very different sort of day yesterday. Very keen to keep fit we walked down the hill early on before Neil arrived to do the podcast with me. We found the fact that the UK is lending 10 billion pounds to the IMF quite difficult to understand. If the cause of most of the world’s economic problems is caused by credit surely the UK, as it is in debt, must borrow massively to have 10 billion pounds to lend. Where will that money come from? Is it real money? Sorry, we both found it difficult to follow. The podcast can be found here. Also with a new podcast we welcome back Cathy Humphreys. Don Woods also had plenty to offer us in the way of nonsensical UK issues.
PARAPROSDOKIANS (Winston Churchill loved them) are figures of speech in which the latter part of a sentence or phrase is surprising or unexpected; frequently humorous. <Equally humorous is if you can inveigle the word “paraprosdokians” into normal conversations. Now that’s skillful!>

1. Where there’s a will, I want to be in it.

2. The last thing I want to do is hurt you. But it’s still on my list
3. Since light travels faster than sound, some people appear bright until you hear them speak.

4. If I agreed with you, we’d both be wrong.

5. We never really grow up; we only learn how to act in public.

6. War does not determine who is right – only who is left..

7. Knowledge is knowing a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad.

8. They begin the evening news with ‘Good Evening,’ then proceed to tell you why it isn’t.

9. To steal ideas from one person is plagiarism. To steal from many is research.

10. Buses stop in bus stations. Trains stop in train stations. On my desk is a work station.

11. I thought I wanted a career. Turns out I just wanted paychecks.

12. In filling out an application, where it says, ‘In case of emergency, notify:’ I put ‘DOCTOR.’

13. I didn’t say it was your fault; I said I was blaming you.

14. Women will never be equal to men until they can walk down the street with a bald head and a beer gut, and still think they are sexy.

Someone asked me the other day, ‘What was your favourite ‘fast food’ when you were growing up?’
‘We didn’t have fast food when I was growing up,’ I informed him.
‘All the food was slow.’
‘C’mon, seriously. Where did you eat?’
‘It was a place called “home”, I explained.
‘Mum cooked every day and when Dad got home from work, we sat down together at the dining room table, and if I didn’t like what she put on my plate, I was allowed to sit there until I did like it.’By this time, the lad was laughing so hard I was afraid he was going to suffer serious internal damage, so I didn’t tell him the part about how I had to have permission to leave the table. But here are some other things I would have told him about my childhood if I’d figured his system could have handled it:

Some parents NEVER owned their own house, or wore jeans, set foot on a golf course, travelled out of the country or had a credit card.

My parents never drove me to school. I had a bicycle that weighed probably 50 pounds, and only had one speed, (slow).

We didn’t have a television in our house until I was 10.
It was, of course, black and white, and the station went off the air at 10 pm, after playing the national anthem and epilogue; it came back on the air at about 6 a..m. and there was usually a locally produced news and farm show on, featuring local people…

I never had a telephone in my room. The only phone was on a party line. Before you could dial, you had to listen and make sure some people you didn’t know weren’t already using the line…

Pizzas were not delivered to our home… But milk was.

All newspapers were delivered by boys and all boys delivered newspapers –My brother delivered a newspaper, seven days a week.  He had to get up at 6AM every morning.

Film stars kissed with their mouths shut. At least, they did in the films. There were no movie ratings because all movies were responsibly produced for everyone to enjoy viewing, without profanity or violence or almost anything offensive.

If you grew up in a generation before there was fast food, you may want to share some of these memories with your children or grandchildren. Just don’t blame me if they bust a gut laughing.

Growing up isn’t what it used to be, is it?

MEMORIES from a friend:

My Dad is cleaning out my grandmother’s house (she died in December) and he brought me an old Royal Crown Cola bottle.   In the bottle top was a stopper with a bunch of holes in it…    I knew immediately what it was, but my daughter had no idea.   She thought they had tried to make it a salt shaker or something.   I knew it as the bottle that sat on the end of the ironing board to ‘sprinkle’ clothes with because we didn’t have steam irons.   Man, I am old.

How many do you remember?

Headlight dip-switches on the floor of the car.
Ignition switches on the dashboard.
Trouser leg clips for bicycles without chain guards.
Soldering irons you heated on a gas burner.
Using hand signals for cars without turn indicators.

Older Than Dirt Quiz:
Count all the ones that you remember, not the ones you were told about.
Ratings at the bottom.

1. Sweet cigarettes
2. Coffee shops with juke boxes
3. Home milk delivery in glass bottles
4. Party lines on the telephone
5. Newsreels before the movie
6. TV test patterns that came on at night after the last show and were there until TV shows started again in the morning.. (There were only 2 channels [if you were fortunate])
7.  Peashooters
8. 33 rpm records
9. 45 RPM records
10. Hi-fi’s
11. Metal ice trays with levers
12. Blue flashbulb
13. Cork popguns
14.. Wash tub wringers

I’ve been sent the following

1.    Q: Why are many coin banks shaped like pigs?
A: Long ago, dishes and cookware in   Europe were made of a dense orange clay called ‘pygg’. When people saved coins in jars made of this clay, the jars became known as ‘pygg banks.’ When an English potter misunderstood the word, he
made a bank that resembled a pig.And it caught on.

2.    Q: Did you ever wonder why dimes, quarters and half dollars have notches, while pennies and nickels do not?
A: The US Mint began putting notches on the edges of coins containing gold and silver to discourage holders from shaving off small quantities of the precious metals.  Dimes, quarters and half dollars are notched because they used to contain silver. Pennies and nickels aren’t notched because the metals they contain are not valuable enough to shave.

3.    Q: Why do men’s clothes have buttons on the right while women’s clothes have buttons on the left?
A: When buttons were invented, they were very expensive and worn primarily by the rich. Because wealthy women were dressed by maids, dressmakers put the buttons on the maid’s right! Since most people are right-handed, it is easier to push buttons on the right through holes on the
left.  And that’s where women’s buttons have remained since.

4.    Q: Why do X’s at the end of a letter signify kisses?
A: In the Middle Ages, when many people were unable to read or write, documents were often signed using an X. Kissing the X represented an oath to fulfill obligations specified in the document. The X and the kiss eventually became synonymous.

5.    Q: Why is shifting responsibility to someone else called ‘passing the buck’?
A: In card games, it was once customary to pass an item, called a buck, from player to player to indicate whose turn it was to deal. If a player did not wish to assume the responsibility, he would ‘pass the buck’ to the next player.

6.    Q: Why do people clink their glasses before drinking a toast?
A: It used to be common for someone to try to kill an enemy by offering him a poisoned drink. To prove to a guest that a drink was safe, it became customary for a guest to pour a small amount of his drink into the glass of the host. Both men would drink it simultaneously. When a guest trusted his host, he would then just touch or clink the host’s glass with his own.

7.    Q: Why are people in the public eye said to be ‘in the limelight’?
A: Invented in 1825, limelight was used in lighthouses and stage lighting by burning a cylinder of lime which produced a brilliant light. In the theater, performers on stage ‘in the limelight’ were seen by the audience to be the center of attention.

8.    Q: Why do ships and aircraft in trouble use ‘mayday’ as their call for help?
A: This comes from the French word m’aidez – meaning ‘help me’ –and is pronounced ‘mayday.’

9.    Q: Why is someone who is feeling great ‘on cloud nine’?
A: Types of clouds are numbered according to the altitudes they attain, with nine being the highest cloud. If someone is said to be on cloud nine, that person is floating well above worldly cares.

10.  Q: Why are zero scores in tennis called ‘love’?
A: In   France , where tennis first became popular, a big, round zero on the scoreboard looked like an egg and was called  ‘l’oeuf,’  which is French for ‘egg.’  When tennis was introduced in the US , Americans pronounced it
‘love.’

11.  Q: In golf, where did the term ‘Caddie’ come from?
A: When Mary, later Queen of Scots, went to France as a young girl (for education & survival), Louis, King of France, learned that she loved the Scot game ‘golf.’ So he had the first golf course outside of Scotland built for her enjoyment. To make sure she was properly chaperoned (and guarded) while she played, Louis hired cadets from a military school to accompany her. Mary liked this a lot and when she returned to Scotland (not a very good idea in the long run), she took the practice with her.  In French, the word cadet is pronounced ‘ca-day’ and the Scots changed it into ‘caddie.’

None of the Beatles attended and the winning songs were played by Joe Loss and his Orchestra. The lead vocal for ‘Michelle’ was sung by Ross MacManus, whose son would go on to become the professional musician Elvis Costello. What a great piece of trivia

My friend Dene Michael from the new Black Lace told me about this sad event

2008, Neil Aspinall, who ran the Apple Corps music empire for the Beatles from 1970 – 2007 died at a hospital in New York from cancer aged 66. A school friend of Sir Paul McCartney and George Harrison, he was regarded by some of the band as the “fifth Beatle” becoming the Beatles’ road manager in 1961 before becoming their personal assistant. He led the legal battle with Apple computers over the use of the Apple name and a royalties dispute between the Beatles and record label EMI. Aspinall had also played background instruments on Beatles tracks including Magical Mystery Tour, Within You Without You and Being for the Benefit of Mr Kite.

The day’s Podcast is always an interesting journey with the story of the day’s music over the years…..and there are some very interesting stories about the music of the day. 1964, The President of The National Federation Of Hairdressers offered a free haircut to the next No.1 group in the UK pop charts. He said ‘The Rolling Stones are the worst, one of them looks as if he’s got a feather duster on his head.

———————————————————————————————–
In my chat with Don Woods we discussed the fact that in the UK Education Minister Michael Gove is at it again…here’s the latest…….you can’t play CONKERSin the playground unless you are wearing protective glasses…I’m all for Health and Safety but I also li9ke to add a measure of common sense. Let’s face it you can be involved in a freak accident in almost anything and it is right to take reasonable precautions but this is ridiculous. Children won’t be able to chase one another in the playground before too long. It was always part of growing up to pass through the ritual of baking your conker or soaking it in vinegar and then looking for challenges. Is nothing sacred? He was in a school talking to the kids..telling them all about his ideas…and they focussed on one kid who was dropping asleep…the rest of them looked bored out of their trees minds.
It was nice playing  a set at the Villajoyosa fundraiser yesterday. The event was arranged in conjunction with the club  by Peter and Sheila formerly of El Guitarra on the seafront but now Peter is spending more time with his guitar. Sheila was telling me she is studying again and sounded like she’s really enjoying herself. Both looked as though they’d had a weight lifted from their shoulders. It was also very nice to see Mark and Kerry Hewitt who obviously love the life at the rugby club.

I was busy enjoying the Barcelona v Real Madrid game when the TV set lost the signal with Real leading 1-0. This has not been Barcelona’s week and I feel they won’t lose three in a row. Chelsea drew with Arsenal and both teams will be looking for better results. I can’t wait til Tuesday!
I produced new podcasts with Don Woods and Cathy Humphreys and we’re getting back in the groove again. Neil will be round tomorrow and I’ve lots of appointments to make with my American contacts.
How to Kill Mosquitoes – NOT A JOKEI was at a deck party awhile back, and the bugs were having a ball biting everyone. A man at the party sprayed the lawn and deck floor with Listerine, and the little demons disappeared. The next year I filled a 4-ounce spray bottle and used it around my seat whenever I saw mosquitoes. And voila! That worked as well. It worked at a picnic where we sprayed the area around the food table, the children’s swing area, and the standing water nearby.  During the summer, I don’t leave home without it….Pass it on.

OUR FRIEND’S COMMENTS: I tried this on my deck and around all of my doors.
It works – in fact, it killed them instantly. I bought my bottle from Target and it
Cost me $1.89. It really doesn’t take much, and it is a big bottle, too; so it is not
As expensive to use as the can of Bug-spray you buy that doesn’t last 30 minutes.
So, try this, please. It will last a couple of days. Don’t spray directly on a wood
Door (like your front door), but spray around the frame. Spray around the window
Frames, and even inside the dog house.
Now these are Good Mosquitos!!!
